George Gershwin, an early American musical genius, transformed public opinion on a style of music that was up until that time found mainly in such “unrepeatable” places as bars and speak-easies. The uniquely American sounds of early jazz received a broad new audience with the advent of Gershwin’s phenomenal hit orchestration, Rhapsody in Blue. Almost single-handedly he brought a “tavern sound” of ragtime to the mainstream public and can now be found in high-brow music collections.
Like pre-Gershwin jazz, Croquet in its early days kept some unruly company. In the 1890’s Croquet at the Boston Common, one of the United State’s oldest public parks, gathered gambling, drinking and licentious crowds. Boston clergymen decried this filthy behavior, which tainted Croquet’s image as a public sport.
Croquet in the United States began as a watered-down version of the courtlier British Commonwealth 6-wicket Croquet. This posh sport was and is still played among the Brits on neatly cut greens similar to those found on golf courses. Heavier wooden mallets and balls are necessary to obtain high accuracy. Intense skill and strategy were aspects of 6-wicket Croquet that the US version did not contain at first. Garden Croquet, as it is known (among other aliases), has remained popular in the US since its introduction over a hundred years ago. US players though, considered it more of a light hearted game than a sport and thus failed to maintain the high status of the English 6-wicket.
It was not until the late 1970’s that the United States began to capture on a widespread basis the original essence of Croquet. Finally it had regained it standing and elegance as a refined sport through a bit of effort by Jack Osborn in 1977. Despite its small beginnings, Osborn’s United States Croquet Association has grown to include nearly 10,000 croquet players playing across the US and Canada on over 600 well-groomed lawns. While Croquet the garden game still enjoys a large following in the U.S., there is also now room for players who are passionate about the more competitive type of croquet that includes deep skill and focus.
Both versions of the game can be purchased and participated in by those interested in this British construction. The milder form of Croquet is great for family reunions, company parties, birthday parties and other get-togethers. The classy 6-wicket Croquet is typically played in clubs where membership fees can pay to maintain the manicured greens. With well documented rules for both versions one can easily learn how to play Croquet at any level, although it may be preferable for beginners to start with a more basic set of rules. A simpler version of the game called Golf Croquet can be easily learned and game time can be as short as 30 minutes. Domestic and international rules apply to club and tournament play and slightly differ from one another.
Croquet has truly transformed into a gentlemen’s, and for that matter, a lady’s sport, requiring physical skills similar to those found in billiards and golf, yet the strategic mind of a chess player. George Gershwin would be proud to see the progress of Croquet in America and perhaps even respect the mainstream attention that it has received, I’m sure he was a croquet enthusiast.

Over the years, sports fans have witnessed foul trades, foul play and foul balls with some of baseball’s greatest players. When ESPN.com’s “The List” catalogued the most beloved ballplayers of all time, fans sounded off about their own major league favorites of the past and present with the possibility that Sinatra was right, and the best is yet to come.
ESPN’s list included infield favorites like Derek Jeter, Ernie Banks, Cal Ripken Jr, and Mark McGwire. Minnesota Twins center fielder Kirby Puckett made the list with fellow outfielders Ichiro Suzuki, Willie Stargell and Sammy Sosa. Of course, the number one spot was reserved for who else, but the “Sultan of Swat,” Babe Ruth.
While ESPN’s compilation covered its bases, ( pun intended) some fans missed their favorites on the field, and had their say. >From an overwhelming amount of letters, ESPN formulated another list by the fans, for the fans. Red Sox Nation wrote 114 letters to put Nomar Garciaparra in the lineup with pleads of “Nomah! How can you not love this guy?” Fans wrote in for Boston’s Teddy Ballgame too, claiming that the reason there was never a movie made about Ted Williams is, “because no one would believe it.” Of course, Red Sox fans were walking around with an 86-year old chip on their shoulder from a mildly poor judgment call back in 1920, until the fall of 2004. But, team loyalty in Beantown is far from fair weather, and despite player trades (Village Idiot, Johnny Damon as New York’s newest lead-off hitter) and player errors, (Buckner in ‘86), fan loyalty to Boston’s boys of summer rarely wavers for the Fenway faithful.
At the other end of the spectrum, Yankee fans put Donny Baseball and Mickey Mantle on the list for the Bronx Bombers with fans begging “How could you forget Mickey Mantle? A mixture of power, speed, grace and personality.” The Mick replaced fan favorite Joe DiMaggio in centerfield, and it wasn’t until the summer of 1961, during a hunt for the homerun title against Roger Maris, did Mantle finally gain the acceptance of fans as the underdog. Now, he’s a legend.
Rookies strive to become them, and fans refuse to let go of them. Legends never die. SLOOH is a robotic observatory on the Canary Islands. Every Monday, whenever conditions permit viewing, you can participate in mulitple SLOOH “missions” over the course of an hour-long session.
What does SLOOH stand for? Apparently it’s about putting the OOH into SLEW!
High atop Mount Teide, on Tenerife in the Canary Islands, the telescopes of SLOOH stand nestled among the facilities of a professional astronomical observatory. SLOOH is a subscription-based web site that streams live images of dozens of celestial objects viewed by its telescopes each clear night over the Internet.
SLOOH currently uses several 3-megapixel CCD cameras and four telescopes (in two domes):

When people buy computers, for either business or personal use, the need to prepare for data loss is perhaps the last thing on anyone’s mind. We probably don’t believe that anything could go wrong until it is too late.
Data loss could be a devastating blow to anyone. On the business front, it could, within minutes send a small business from active and operating to ‘out of business’. In addition, on personal grounds, you could loss weeks, months or even years of very valuable data, with very slim chance of ever re-creating it.

“I look at about 100 different projects a year, most of which go into the round filing cabinet on my floor,” said Tony Harvey, the senior technical advisor to ESO Uranium (TSX: ESO), and formerly a senior manager of Wright Engineers-Fluor Daniels, which was involved with the design and construction of 14 mines worldwide. Harvey quickly ticked off what is necessary to attract his eye, “I need to see history. I need to see signposts before I give it any credence.” So why is he advising little-known ESO Uranium, after a long, prolific career?
“I believe this one has a huge amount of history,” Harvey argued. “Not only have you got the Cluff Lake mine, which already confirms the presence of uranium, but you have got the Shea Creek drilling intercepts which validate it. We have the conductors streaming onto our property. We have the boulders, which is also another sign post.” The boulders, of which Tony Harvey refers, are the six uranium-mineralized boulders near the ESO Uranium project on the company’s Cluff property. Near those boulders, a promising drill hole from the 1970s indicated 0.85% U3O8 over 2.3 meters. It was all but forgotten until the recent explosion of exploration activity in Saskatchewan’s Athabasca Basin, an area which has helped Cameco (NYSE: CCJ) grow into a company with a market capitalization of nearly $12 billion.
What ESO Uranium’s geological team will be looking for at the company’s Cluff property are Cluff Lake style uranium deposits in basement rocks with the Carswell structure close to the unconformity with sandstones of the Athabasca group. That was allegedly created by the meteor’s impact.
Drilling in the Meteor’s Wake
“The value of the ore extracted at the Cluff mine, in today’s terms, would be equivalent to $2.6 billion,” explained Harvey. “That’s how much was extracted at the Cluff mine.” The company’s vice president of exploration, Benjamin Ainsworth, who is both a senior geologist and a mining engineer, helped explain the Cluff structure. “A meteorite probably impacted at this location and with sufficient force to break right through the layers of Athabasca sandstone on the surface. On rebound, basement rocks got lifted back up. In bouncing back out, it also lifted up the surrounding Athabasca rocks and tipped them up, if you can imagine, like an opening flower.” As a result, the basement got lifted up to the surface and made it easier to find and mine the uranium at Cluff. Ainsworth added, “The significance of that for me and our group is that shows very high grade uranium deposits in the western side of Athabasca.”
Drilling a property helps the geological team better understand the area. Since the Cluff property was mined out, two decades ago, additional scientific study has opened up new doors. At the 67th Annual Meteoritical Society Meeting, University of Quebec Earth Science professors presented a paper entitled, “A Re-Evaluation of the Size of the Carswell Astrobleme.” The Montreal scientists concluded in the 2004 annual conference held in Brazil, “The Carswell impact structure is therefore older and larger than previously estimated… the central uplift considered to be under the annular dolomitic unit would suggest a crater size in the basement of 118 to 125 kilometers wide.” While some believe the meteor hit about 478 million years ago, recent evidence suggests it may have been closer to 1.8 billion years ago.
Ainsworth warned there is a lot of risk in drilling for uranium deposits. “The geometry of these things is damn small.” ESO president Jonathan George pointed out that the world’s richest uranium deposit, McArthur River, hosting about 400 million pounds of uranium, had half of its deposit in an area about half the size of a football field. “I think that’s mind boggling,” he said, “that a $7 billion project would be on an area that small.”

There are lots of reasons why you would need a garden shed and as luck would have it there are cheap garden sheds to suit just about every last need. Looking after your tools and making them well available is a real good idea. You can find sheds on the internet that are the same sheds you’d purchase in the store. Knowing the key components to a home or office fitness program is the first step in defining the necessary elements for achieving lifelong health and fitness success.
The following tips can help you refine your approach to executing your home fitness program by helping you create a mental and physical environment that is conducive to permanent success.
1) If your program happens to be the focus of this year’s resolution, rename your New Year’s resolution your New Life resolution and think of what you are doing as something you will do forever, not for a month or two. Focus on long term benefits, not short term changes.

5) Realize you do not need to spend two hours in the gym every day to get into great shape. There is a lot you can do at home or at the office in 30 minutes. There are many exercise DVDs and small, economical and portable pieces of fitness equipment to provide you with endless workout programs. Gather the tools that suit you best before you start your new program. If you are still unsure, hire a personal trainer to consult with you on starting a home fitness program.
Living healthy and fit is, first, a psychological exercise as you have to think about what you need to adjust in your life and daily habits before you can actually take the actions that will result in the changes you desire.
Spend time on your adjusting mindset by asking yourself what things are most important to you in life and how health and fitness are related to the things that matter most to you. Then take the actions which are in line with your values and goals.

There’s been almost 2 metres snow during the last 7 days. It has been so deep that ski lifts have been shut, the train has been stopping at Chamonix train station and not going up to Switzerland. Some roads were closed and weather warnings issued.
Contrast this to a couple of winters past, when we experienced the unusually mild February conditions, earth appearing on pistes, and warnings that climate change could mean the death of snowboarding in Europe. The OECDs study from winter 2007 admonished that climate change would make skiing holidays far too costly for many holiday makers, with a third of ski fields closing and the disappearance of alpine glaciers. Experts assert that it’s virtually impossible to assign these yearly variations in the snow conditions to the outcomes of climate change.
So we could be experiencing the worst recession in nearly 30 yrs, and the Sterling has dropped to new lows versus the euro, however the conditions are fantastic, and the latest bookings prove that skiers are keen to enjoy the fine conditions with our ski accommodation full. Its certainly the best in nine winter seasons, and many are announcing that it’s the nicest ski snowboarding snow in at least 10 seasons.
