It has already been ten days since residents and businesses of Penrhyndeudraeth in Gwynedd have had to do without a working broadband connection. The reason for this inconvenience is mainly due to an outdated telephone exchange, but this is becoming ridiculous. It is the third time in 2008 alone, that these villagers have been subjected to similar broadband connection failure. Businesses are losing money due to this, and a local travel agency claimed a revenue loss of £10,000 in online bookings that were missed.
The network provider for the village is BT, and their response to the complaints is not encouraging. In a statement they said that they were aware that “some” customers were having connection problems, and that it was under investigation. They further said that the customers should contact their broadband providers to try and resolve the problem. However, all of the villagers have the same problems, irrespective of which company administers their broadband access. The most annoying aspect is that BT has not given any timeframe as to when broadband service will be restored. They also made no remarks or promises on plans to improve or upgrade the outdated exchange, which is the real culprit here.
